Replay of 10 years of job search advice
Recently a number of people I know have lost their jobs or asked me in-general for career advice. I wanted to share a selection of old articles around these topics in one post and gather feedback.
Introduction
During the years I worked in Consulting, Executive Search and when I started Disruptive Outcomes, I wrote a lot of articles about hiring, career development and job search. I’ve wondered what to do with all these articles. Recently, I started slowly updating some of the posts as a number of people I know lost their jobs or started asking me for tips. Many of the posts are 10 years old but broadly the content seems still relevant. Please do share your feedback in the comments section.
Selection of Tips and Info
These are general tips across job search, interviewing, and career development. Let me know if more/less details are useful for any of these topics.
1. Before any move
These are about evaluating where you are at and whether it is or is not the time to move. If you have a choice, the job you have is dramatically safer than another role.
2. Starting the search
These articles are about the start of your search, planning and thinking through things like your CV and how to approach recruiters and managers.
3. Interviewing
These tips are more focused on interviewing. I’d like everyone to think of interviews more as a discussion, but often it does end up being an assessment in some manner.
4. Offers and negotiations
Once you are finally negotiating for that new job, these tips can help you consider your options and setup a good approach. This can also apply to internal negotiations for a promotion or salary increase.
