The end of LinkedIn
I’ll be deleting my LinkedIn profile by the end of March 2023. For a number of years now I’ve been working on “Becoming Less” - slowly deleting my digital junkyard.
LinkedIn has been a struggle for me. I used to be so active and I loved it years ago when I was actively networking, selling, recruiting and job searching.
For the last 3 years, I’ve struggled to find anything of value in it. I go to Substack for newsletters and Spotify for podcasts. I’m starting to post more on Substack but not in the manner that LinkedIn requires to be relevant.
Other than feeding the content monster, I just can’t find a reason to use LinkedIn any more. If I want to network, I’d prefer to reach people directly. And if I end up needing to find a job in the future, I’d trust referrals from people I know much more than random people on LinkedIn or recruiters. And if I really need to, I can always resubscribe and pay a bit to get full access without all the connection bullsh$t.
I just don’t see how 10K connections that I never talk to is worthwhile keeping around. I’ll welcome that little sliver of attention back and one less nagging worry at the back of my mind.
I deleted Facebook and Twitter years ago because I don’t even have enough time to spend with those people I knew and wish a could get to know better. I have young children, a lovely wife and an amazing family. Every spare minute is worth more to me with them than posting, chatting and playing-the-game.
And any time outside of family is work time where there are tons of crazy, fun things to do. People I should spend more time with. Problems to solve and things to learn. My company has Yammer and that seems good enough for sharing social, meaningful content - with little to no trolling or flaming.
I wish you all well with your LinkedIn adventure. I am sorry that I couldn’t get to know you all better. I’m sure we will meet again on Substack, pass randomly in a coffee shop or meet on a plane - so long as we have something more meaningful to exchange than a click and a request for a click, call or interview.
Make your life amazing.
