I once worked for a company where the managers leveraged the Microsoft admin settings to search employee emails; understand connections between people (eg who was emailing who most regularly); and openly tracked and recorded calls, call time.
This is amazing! I have never heard of management doing this sort of thing; but maybe they do it all the time, and we just don't find out about it. I'm now officially paranoid...
Thanks for finding this and taking the time to read and respond. I should update it. It’s part of the broader Employee Monitoring trend. I remember reading an article many years ago that had some great quotes from employers who insisted that this kind of monitoring improved performance and productivity and was “good for employees” but I can’t find it. I did find this recently written article that gives a good overview of the space today https://www.raconteur.net/future-of-work/employee-monitoring-staff-response
As it’s more likely to have a bad manager than a good one (too many things required to be a good manager) and I believe that a hallmark of bad management is insecurity - employee monitoring and trying to manipulate people via that monitoring will continue to be prevalent throughout most industries.
